I have a new customer whose Dentrix G4 Server crashed. I was able to restore the original install on another machine to get them going but I'm clueless on how to migrate the Dentrix data from this existing machine to a new machine with a fresh install of Dentrix G4. From what I could gather it's just a matter of moving the Data folder from the old Dentrix directory into the new one. For example, create a folder C: Dentrix Data and C: Dentrix Doc. The other folders (Program Files and Tutor) are fine to leave at their defaults, or you can move them to c: dentrix also if you want. This is due to security features found in newer versions of Windows, which try to protect the program files and Windows directories, but can end up causing your data to be divided into two different locations. Dentrix is what you are thinking - install the same version on the new system. Create a new, 'blank' database (it installs placeholder files with no data in them). Upgrade it to the same version that you are using on the old system (check Help| About Dentrix for version numbers). Then copy the old data over, replacing the blank data files with the real ones. Share and set permissions for the data folder to be read/written by workstations, and you are on your way. Possible problem: Is the new server running a 64-bit version of Windows? If so, does the DVD say 64-bit compatible? If you answered yes and no respectively, then this may be your big hurdle. As you try to update G4 through the Productivity Pack 6 and 7 updates, you may get hung up by 64-bit compatibility when it attempts to update/convert the blank data forward. Dentrix offers a remastered disc which is compatible for a fee, or the G5 version DVDs include a copy of the compatible G4 version on them. Otherwise, you might try copying your newer data over FIRST, and see if the upgrades will proceed without hitting the incompatibility problems. - Dentrix G5 (15.0) uses an SQL database. Anyway I set up a test rig and copied the Data folder from the old install to the new and I got this recurring incompatible database error. Ryan: The new machine is a Win7 Pro 64 and the G4 disks I have are 64 bit compatible. The old machine was running Win XP. Based on my first try I found out that the old install is on version 14 and the new install is version 14.1. I'm not sure what version of the Productivity pack they are using. Their office is on the other side of town (and closed until next week Tuesday) so I'm trying to restore the backup I have on another machine so that I can see exactly what versions it's running.
